Team Player – Ron Volk

You can look at any sport, football, basketball, hockey, baseball, soccer, etc. It takes a team to win; one individual can’t do it alone no matter how talented.  Have you ever considered that in this life or the one to come, we will all have to be team players. As I think of my own walk as God has guided me into His truths, I never gave much thought about being a team player, but, nevertheless, we are all learning to become team players, our walk is bigger than ourselves.

Those of us who have been called out of this world by God consider ourselves to be part of a team. As in all teams, we, are potential members of God’s team and must try our best each day to overcome our Adamic nature and live by the rules for the team. If we truly want to inherit eternal life and be part of a much larger team in the Kingdom of God.

We should all strive to work together towards learning how to be a team.  Ministers, especially ministers and all involved in the ministry in one aspect or another and should definitely be good team players.  It is not about self, but the greater good of the Church.

As a minister of God, we should always be setting a good example.  Titus 2:7. In all things you yourself set an example of good works; in doctrine uncorrupted, serious-minded, and sincere; 8. Use sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that the one who opposes you may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say about you,

I remember when I worked at Hornbacher’s we would have our weekly manager meetings and at different meetings we would have to choose teams or partners to solve made-up problems or scenarios and. I would look for the best problem solver and person I knew really cared about their job. What factors would you use to select your team members?

The eight highlighted points to follow were from one of the meetings. I don’t know about you, but to me there are biblical truths to each point.

Here are a few attributes we would consider, demonstrates that they are reliable You can count on reliable team members to get the job done.  He or she follows through on tasks given. Matthew 25:23. His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! Because you were faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ (A Faithful Version)

Another attribute Knows how to communicate well with others, Teams need people and express their thoughts and speak up, respect others and their ideas and for the work of the team. They Must be respectful, positive and confident. Colossians 4:6. Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how to answer each one. (A Faithful Version)

Another attribute Listen attentively because everyone has something to offerGood listeners are essential for teams to function effectively. Teams need players who can absorb, understand, and consider ideas and points of view. Team members must discipline themselves to first listen and then to speak. James 1:19. For this reason, my beloved brethren, let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger (A Faithful Version)

Another attribute functions as an active participant good team players share. Beyond team meeting members need to feel comfortable talking with each other and passing along information from day to day.  They keep other team members in the loop with information and expertise as it helps complete the task. 1 Thessalonians 5:11. Therefore, encourage one another, and edify one another, even as you are already doing. (A Faithful Version)

Another attribute cooperates and pitches in to help, cooperation is an act of working with others and acting as a team to accomplish a task. Good team members besides differences will come together and figure a way to work out and solve their differences. Proverbs 11:14. Where there is no wisdom, the people fall; but in the multitude of wise counselors there is safety. (A Faithful Version)

Another attribute works as a problem-solver team, of course deal with problems. Good team players are willing to deal with all kinds of problems in a solution-oriented manner. There are problem-solvers and there are problem-blamers. Team players get problems out in the open and disuse them and then solve them. Proverbs 11: 6. The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them, but transgressors shall be taken in their own lust. (A Faithful Version) Honesty can keep you safe, but if you can’t be trusted, you trap yourself.

Another attribute a good team player will always treat others in a respectful and supportive manner and always be respectful and supportive of others. Quite simply, effective team players deal with people in a professional manner. John 21:16. He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonas, do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Yes, Lord. You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.” 17. He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonas, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things. You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. (A Faithful Version)

Another attribute shows commitment to the team Strong team players care about their work, the team, and the team’s work. They show up every day with care and commitment up front.  They want to make a good effort, and they want other team members to do the same. Ephesians 4:12. For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ; (A Faithful Version)

They care about what the team is doing, and they contribute to its success without needing a push.

Team players with commitment look beyond their own piece of work and care about the team’s overall work. In the end, their commitment is about getting things done, it is about seeing the team succeed and knowing they have contributed to the success. Good team players show motivation and always, always trustworthy.

Are we this committed in our daily walk with our heavenly Father, to become a good ‘team player.’ And use the attributes that God has given to us.

Your brother in Christ,

Ron
